Illustration
Bekah came to me with an idea for her album, Chrysalis. She knew she wanted a close up watercolor illustration of a yellow butterfly wing and wanted to somehow put an emphasis on the process of chrysalis, or a transitional state. Bekah uses the phrase to draw a parallel between a butterfly emerging from a cocoon and herself emerging as a professional musician.
We both wanted to keep the imagery as abstract as possible to leave room for the viewer/listener to form their own opinion. Together we decided on the concept of the cave with stalactites and stalagmites forming as the butterfly prepares to leave.
The Brief
Selected Concept
Original Painting
For this project I used watercolors, salt, gelly roll white pens, and prismacolors. I then scanned the artwork, made some minor adjustments in Photoshop and vectorized the image in Illustrator.
